Before I knew How to use the color wheel and the main color principles I wasn`t sure whether my outfits were matched and color coordinated well or not. so I will tell you in this blog all that you need to create a well-balanced outfit from all measures.
Note: You Don`t need the color wheel for outfit creation, but the color wheel is one of the ways to make a color-coordinated outfit. I will talk first about how to use the color wheel for color coordinating, then I will talk about the other way to do it.
What is the color wheel? It is a tool that can tell you which colors match each other with some simple techniques.
The color wheel contains 3 types of colors and there are:
Primary colors (RYB): These are the main colors of the color wheel (Red, Yellow, Blue) and they are the base for any other colors.
secondary colors: Are created by mixing the primary colors.
tertiary colors: Are created by mixing Primary and Secondary colors.
If you want to know more detailed information about the color wheel( It can help you with design and more. but it will not make a difference when creating an outfit) Check out this article on wikiHow Co-authored by Kathi Burns, CPO®
How to use the color wheel for outfit creation?
Now you`ll need a color wheel for this step, you can use canva color wheel(And you`ll find very useful information there)
1: Complementary Colors: Are opposed to each other
2: Analogous colors: Are next to each other and they fade into each other, there are two colors on the left and the other one is on the right of your chosen color.
3: Monochromatic: To achieve this look you should use shading or tinting.
Shading: is to add black to make the color darker
Tinting: is to add white to make the color lighter
Now we have finished with the more technical method, let`s go to the simpler and my favorite techniques when creating an outfit
Now you can forget everything about the color wheel and apply these methods to create a color-balanced outfit There are 3 main types of colors:
Earth tones: it`s all the natural colors
Nutrales: There are darker versions of earth tones.
Non-Earthtone colors: the rest colors (With this it`s better to use the color wheel).
Now if you tried to put an entire outfit with any earth tones colors you will find out that it works.
And the same thing applies to neutral colors. That`s why making an outfit from either neutral or earth tone colors is mostly the best choice to stay safe when color coordinating, but most importantly most of the classic looks (like old money) are made of neutral colors.
Those were the practical steps but there are some important things to keep in mind:
Skin tone:
Skin tone matters but not that much. Most of the time you can wear any color you want. But some colors don’t suit some skin colors, We want to write a separate paragraph on this topic. But for now, if you want to know more you can watch this YouTube video by real men real style. He dives into everything you want to know about skin tones and gives you an e-book that contains every color that works with every skin tone.
And of course, the color theory is important to know:
1- color harmony
2- Color temperature
3-color context
